Document Types

Email Thread

Connected series of email messages on a single topic. May include multiple senders, recipients, and replies. Common format in archive.

Text Message

SMS or other mobile messaging communication. May be extracted from phone records or device forensics.

Flight Manifest

Official record of passengers on an aircraft. Includes pilot logs from Epstein's private planes including the "Lolita Express."

Deposition Transcript

Sworn out-of-court testimony transcribed by a court reporter. Used in civil litigation discovery.

Archive & Technical Terms

Document ID

Unique alphanumeric identifier assigned to each document in the archive. Format: PREFIX-YYYY-MM-DD-TYPE-NNN. Used for citations and references.

SHA-256 Hash

Cryptographic fingerprint of a document. 64-character string that changes if even one byte is modified. Used to verify document integrity.

Metadata

Data about a document: creation date, author, sender, recipient, subject, file size, page count, and modification history.

Checksum

Mathematical value computed from file contents. If two files have the same checksum, they are identical. Used for verification.

Chain of Custody

Documented history of who possessed a document from source to archive. Establishes authenticity and prevents tampering claims.

Version Control

System for tracking document changes over time. When corrections are made, both original and corrected versions are preserved.

Legal Terms

Redaction

Removal or obscuring of sensitive information from a document before public release. Appears as black boxes or white space in PDFs. May protect privacy, national security, or ongoing investigations.

Unsealed Documents

Court records previously kept confidential that have been made public by judicial order. The 2026 DOJ release included many previously sealed materials.

Deposition

Sworn testimony given outside of court, typically during pretrial discovery. Witness answers questions under oath with transcript produced.

Discovery

Legal process where parties exchange evidence and information before trial. Many archive documents originated from civil discovery.

Non-Prosecution Agreement (NPA)

2008 agreement between Epstein and federal prosecutors that limited charges. Later ruled unconstitutional for failing to notify victims.

Protective Order

Court order limiting disclosure of sensitive information during litigation. Many documents were subject to protective orders before unsealing.

Subpoena

Legal order requiring someone to provide testimony or produce documents. Many archive materials were obtained through subpoenas.

Grand Jury

Legal body that determines if sufficient evidence exists to charge someone with a crime. Grand jury proceedings are secret; related documents often heavily redacted.
